Spring and summer are the busiest moving seasons. Everyone wants to make sure their house is in order, but who wants to be stuck inside cleaning on the first warm day? Get started early and be finished by the time the lovely weather rolls in. We’re following up our blog post on Organizing and Downsizing with this Spring Cleaning series. We’ll be breaking it down room by room, making the cleaning process just a little bit easier to handle and less stressful overall. We recommend you start off with the area that sees the most traffic.
The Living Room
Put all the clutter into boxes and take them out of the room. Now is not the time to de-clutter; we’re here for a deep clean. You can deal with the magazines, books, toys, games, and knickknacks later.
Start with dusting the ceiling and work your way down. There’s no point cleaning the room only to cover it with a layer of dust. Don’t forget the ceiling fans, bookshelves, coffee tables, entertainment unit, etc. Make sure to get into all the corners.
Vacuum all fabrics with a hand vacuum, including couches, armchairs, footstools, lampshades, drapes, etc.
Vacuum or sweep and mop the floor, getting into all the little nooks and crannies. Be sure to clean right up to the baseboards.
Disinfect hard surfaces with a non-toxic cleaning solution and a damp cloth. You’ll notice the scent for a few days, so choose something mild or pleasant smelling.
You’re now ready to bring in the knickknack boxes and put everything back. Don’t want to clutter up your newly cleaned living space? Close up those boxes and stash them away. For the next week or so take out what you need, as you need it. After a handful of days, you’ll know which items are essential and which are just taking up space.
