You’ve got too much stuff to move it all yourself, but you’re worried about the cost of a professional moving company? No need to fret! We’ve got some great cost-saving suggestions:
1) Get an accurate estimate based on the contents of your house. Most movers will ask you for a full accounting of your possessions either in person during an in-home estimate, with pictures, or over the phone. Don’t forget about the boxes in the basement, attic and garage! You want to be sure to include all items that must be moved for an accurate estimate.
2) DIY packing. Many moving companies also offer packing services, and provide professionally trained packers and moving supplies. However, if you want to keep costs down, you can always pack yourself. Make sure to use a red permanent marker when labelling boxes. It’s easier to see and won’t blend in with the colour of the box. Don’t forget to label any fragile items with “FRAGILE” and “THIS WAY UP” arrows.
3) Schedule disconnect times for about a week before your move day — you don’t want to have to pay for cable, phone and utilities when you aren’t even there!
4) Speed up the disassembly process by taking apart as many large pieces of furniture as you can ahead of time. Take down your wall-mounted TV, unscrew the chair legs from your couch and separate your box spring and mattress. This will make things easier for the movers, which means less time loading the truck and more money in your pocket!
