At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, we follow a set of core values our organization lives by. One of our strongest is the GRANDMA RULE®. Simply put, the GRANDMA RULE® is to treat everyone the way you would want your Grandma to be treated. It emphasizes treating everyone with respect, patience, and going above and beyond in the service that is provided. It’s something that our teams take to heart as we understand that moving as a senior, regardless of the size of the move, can be a difficult transition.
Recently our organization celebrated Senior’s day. We believe that our devotion to our older loved one’s shouldn’t be limited to one day a year, so we came up with a list of fun activities that you could do together year round.
Activities that you can do with your Grandparents:
Walking
As your grandparents grow older, it’s important for them to maintain an active lifestyle, or their muscles and legs may deteriorate. Organize a fun activity with them outside that aligns with their fitness level. Often doing something as simple as going for a walk or sightseeing around a park close by will provide them with enough physical activity for the day.
Playing a game
One of the easiest activities that you can do with your grandparent is to sit down and play a game with them. It really could be anything; play cards, a board game, puzzle or a trivia game. If they’re feeling really adventurous perhaps you could show them how to play your latest video game. Regardless of the activity, they will appreciate the time you spend together.
Cooking
Many of us have grown up with fond memories of visiting their grandparents and sitting down to eat a delicious meal. Tell them you would love to learn how to cook some of their favourite recipes. This can be a great bonding experience for you both as they will be proud to share their family’s recipes and you get a tasty treat when you’re done! You’ll be able to save these recipes for your own family as well.
Taking photos
Grandparents cherish the images that they have of loved ones. Often they’re not as technologically savvy as their grandsons or granddaughters though, and generally rely upon scrapbooks or have printed photo albums. Spend some time taking photos with them. They will appreciate having up to date photographs of you that they can share with friends. This time of year is an ideal for organizing a scenic photograph session, or photo walk. Fall can be one of the most beautiful times of the year.
Learning a hobby
Learn about some of your grandparent’s favourite hobbies that they did growing up. You’d be surprised to hear of some of the things they used to and still may be able to do. Have them teach you whatever they’re into, whether it’s fishing, knitting, cooking, golfing, or even going sailing. Showing interest in the things that interest them, can open up new doors for you and make you closer.
Regardless of what activities you end up doing with your grandparents, you can be sure the most important thing to them is to spend time with you.
