Collection or Clutter – How to Tell the Difference

September 16, 2020 By A Very Moving Blog Leave a Comment

Whether you’re trying to declutter or want to take a small trip down memory lane, nothing beats an organized new place. Sorting out things isn’t all that glamorous and can be challenging to collectors. There’s a fine line between what’s to collect and what’s purely clutter.

If you’re trying to separate your trash from treasure, there a few things to make it simpler. If you give yourself some time to clean, you could eliminate the stress over throwing away things that you cherish. Take some time to clearly define what to keep and throw out or give away.

Evaluate your things

Evaluate each item at a time. Take a moment to think about why you bought it, why you should keep it, and if there are any memories attached to it. Next, ask if you can live without it. Would you want to show it off to your family or friends or just to reminisce with? If it’s been put away for a while or you forgot it existed, you’re better off getting rid of it.

Decide what you want to display

Depending on what you like collecting, there are several ways to display them. Pick out the items you love the most and see how it could fit with the rest of the decor in your home. You could look online to get some inspiration if you collect something specific.

Have an endgame in mind

There is only so much space in your home to fill with your collection of memories. Do you know when will you ever stop collecting? As you save your collectibles and get rid of the clutter, take stock of how many collectibles you are taking with you. Make sure that you have enough space in your garage or shelf and reevaluate. Decide on how you want to potentially grow your collection and how to best store everything.

Label your safekeeps

To avoid all the unnecessary clutter the next time around, it’s important to have everything organized and labeled. It requires an extra step beyond putting things into containers and remembering where they are. With clear indicators like labels, you’ll save yourself the trouble of having to start the process all over again.

The weeding out process may take longer than you expect, but don’t get discouraged if you can’t get through everything in a few hours. Make sure you take extra care and time into sorting your belongings so that you don’t accidentally throw away something of value to you.
