Moving in Canada is stressful because of multiple factors including weather and distance. However, with proper planning and some advice from our moving experts, you can greatly reduce that stress.
So how do you pack for an upcoming move while reducing your stress? Here are our top tips
Step 1: Set An Action Plan
Create an action plan that will ensure you to keep track of your move, elements of your plan should include your essential/favorite items, deadlines, budget and a moving company to help you with the process.
Be sure once you complete your plan: purchase all of your needed moving boxes and packing supplies including tape, packing paper, markers, paper pads, bubble wrap, and stretch wrap for your move (overestimate, you will thank us later).
In addition, to help the planning process go to your new place and plan where you want your furniture to go upon arrival. If you can’t visit your new home, you may be able to view the 360-degree virtual tour or floorplan which many realtors have online. If that is not available you can always ask for measurements!
Preparation for every aspect will enable you to know what to expect in the coming weeks. Predictability and limit of risk during a move will significantly lower your stress levels. To help you out we’ve created a moving checklist which you can download here).
Step 2: Declutter
Get rid of the items you never use, make some money or help people in need while you are at it!
Use the Facebook Marketplace to list your unneeded items in your local area. Alternatively, drop off the items at your local charity thrift store.
Note: If you want to keep items but do not have a place for them in your new home, consider putting them into climate controlled storage for later use.
Step 3: Remember to send change of address forms
Some common things that will need to be changed are:
- Bank
- Drivers license
- Health Card
- Children’s school records
- Car insurance
- Newspaper & Magazine Subscriptions
Step 4: Day Before Prep!
Make sure that you and your family pack a suitcase or small bag with essential items to tide you over until you’re settled into your new home. In addition, be sure to clean out your fridge, wash your stove and the floors, so you do not have extra tasks on your mind on moving day.
Step 5: DIY (Moving Without Movers)
Seeing all of the items in your home and knowing that you need to move them from A to B is a terrifying sight. You may not know where to start.
We suggest, to begin with the larger items and work your way down to the forks and knives. Get the larger items out of the way, and load them first.
If aren’t renting a truck capable of fitting all your possessions, you will have to make multiple trips.
It’s essential to make sure that you are labeling your boxes with the room you wish them to be in your new home. This will make the unloading process a lot easier.
Step 5: Moving With a Professional Move Team
Today is the day; the movers have arrived; you are all prepared and sorted. The movers will take a look at all the things they need to load onto the truck and plan for the most efficient way to do that. Once all your items are loaded in the moving truck, it’s time to get moving. Hiring professional movers can make one of the most stressful events in a person’s life hassle free!
Professional movers will:
- Make planning easy
- Ensure the safety of your belongings
- Have the proper equipment
- Eliminate risks
- Save you time and physical stress.
- Keep things organized
- Move you with efficiency
Step 6: Arrival to Your New Home
Unload and move the labelled furniture and boxes to their respective rooms. Do not worry about getting boxes unpacked for now as you want to get everything out of the moving vehicle. Once all your items are unloaded, start unpacking and putting the larger pieces into their pre-planned locations. Using professional movers will ease the arrival/ unpacking situation for you as getting large objects through doorways and navigating stairs is gruelling to someone who isn’t used to it!
Power Move:
Reserve a moving company for your move as soon as you know you are moving. In the busy summer moving season you’ll want to contact movers about 4 weeks from your preferred move date in order assure availability.
