The professional moving company you hire will no doubt have years of experience, and will be able to take care of all the moving and packing for you. This means less stress for you on moving day.
However, there are a few things that a moving company won’t be able to do. To make the big day go off without a hitch , homeowners should take care to complete a few important tasks before the movers arrive. This will make a faster, easier and more cost effective moving day for all.
Cleaning
Be sure to clean off all surfaces, including counter tops, tables and desks. That way, all the furniture will be ready to go on the day of the move.
Before packing away your small appliances, clean them inside and out. You don’t want to pack away a toaster with bread crumbs still stuck in the bottom!
If you are moving your large appliances, make sure to empty and clean out your refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher and laundry units. You’ll also want to make sure there’s enough time for your fridge and freezer to defrost.
Labelling
Use a permanent red or black marker to write the destination and contents on the sides and top of each box. That way, your movers will know where to put the boxes in your new home after they’ve been unloaded from the moving truck, and you’ll be able to easily find what you need when you arrive.
Make sure to also label boxes that have fragile items, and alert your movers as to which boxes will need extra care.
Small Items
You will no doubt have many small items that are easily lost, such as jewelry. Don’t just throw them into a box. Use plastic baggies to keep them all in one place and avoid losing pieces.
Clear the Way
You’ll want to clear a pathway from each room to the front door. Don’t pile up furniture and boxes in front of the front door, as that will make it more difficult for the movers to maneuver around your house, and will only serve to make your move go that much slower. You want the movers to be able to swiftly move from truck to home.
Also be sure to leave your driveway free of vehicles. Park your car on the street or in a neighbour’s driveway. The movers will need that space for the moving truck, and the closer they can get to your front door, the quicker your move will go, saving time and money.
Even if you have professional packers come in to do your packing for you, these few tasks should be done by homeowners, to make sure moving day is a stress-free and pleasant process for everyone involved.
