Here at Two Men And A Truck, we receive a lot of questions about moving lamps – especially tall floor lamps. You want your move to go as smoothly as possible, and that includes all furniture delivered intact. Professional moving companies often also offer a professional packing services as well. Professional packers are trained in packing unwieldy and delicate household items like floor lamps.
If you want to take a shot at packing it up yourself, though, you’ll want to follow proper packing procedure. Luckily, our professional movers and packers have years of experience and they’ve put together a list of steps for packing lamps for a move.
Step 1: Get extra tall boxes from your local moving company. Make sure the entire lamp fits inside the box without the head sticking out the top.
Step 2: Reinforce the bottom of the boxes with several layers of packing tape. Don’t just fold the flaps over – that’s not secure enough for a heavy object like a floor lamp!
Step 3: Remove bulb and shade. Wrap them carefully in bubble wrap and put them in their own labelled box.
Step 4: Wrap cord around base. Tuck the end in to keep it from unraveling.
Step 5: Place a large piece of bubblewrap on the floor and gently lay the lamp down on it’s side. Roll the lamp up in bubblewrap, then fold over the edges and secure with packing tape.
Step 6: Place the lamp in box base down.
Step 7: Use extra bubble wrap to fill up empty space in the box. You want the lamp to be as snug and secure as it can be, so it won’t get jostled around in the moving truck.
Step 8: Write fragile on all sides of the box. Also draw “This Side Up” arrows.
And there you have it! By taking just a little bit of extra time and care in the packing process, you can be sure your precious household furniture will arrive at your new house safe and sound on moving day!
