When it comes to moving your household sometimes you just can’t take it all. Before packing, take a look around. You can simplify your move by downsizing.
The best way to do this is by selling old or unused items at a garage sale. It will help you get organized before the big move, save you some money and also bring in some extra cash.
To pull off a successful garage sale follow these tips:
Collect:
Gather as much of your old possessions as possible. Even things you dismiss as junk could be worth some money. Lawn mowers, baseball cards and salt and pepper shakers are some of the big garage sale sellers. But don’t try to sell potentially harmful products like old cleaning chemicals or baby cribs or car seats that don’t meet new standards.
Spruce Up:
Clean dirty items – you’ll be more likely to get your asking price. Polish old furniture or give them a new coat of paint.
Collaborate:
Combine your sale with a neighbour. This will not only add to what you’re offering, but also help get the word out to more people – not to mention help cover any ad costs. Check out local church groups or community associations – they may be hosting a collective sale you can join.
Advertize:
Spread the word to make the most of your garage sale. Advertize in local newspapers and online, noting key items you have to sell. Post bold “Garage Sale” signs with your address on nearby street corners the night before your sale.
Price:
Price your items at 50 to 75 percent off the original price. Buyers are looking for bargains, so expect to give an extra 10 to 20 percent off the price tag. Decide before if you will accept personal cheques. If not, post a sign saying so. Have coins in your cash box or money belt for change.
Sell:
The fun part. Play music and place big furniture at the front to usher in your buyers. Group items into specific categories – tools, toys, kitchen, etc. If possible, plug in any lamps or light fixtures.
Make your sale wheelchair accessible and leave plenty of room for people to wander through. It also never hurts to have coffee or lemonade and muffins available for 50 cents at a side table.
Garage sales can be an organizer’s best friend. With less clutter, there’s less to worry about when moving, making for a more laid back moving day.
