Getting ready to make a household move? Packing and moving can seem like such a hassle. Did you know there are some shortcuts you can take? Here are some organizing hacks from our professional movers and packers.
Don’t take your clothes off the hanger.
There is a moving box specifically made for moving clothes. Wardrobe boxes are tall and have a bar, just like a mini-closet. Keep your clothes on their hangers and simply move them from the closet to the wardrobe box. No need to fold your clothes and box them up! It also makes it super easy to unpack. Just slide the clothes off the bar and into the closet.
Keep Your Cords Organized With Toilet Paper Rolls.
Do you hate untangling that mess of cords from all your electronics? Wrap each cord around a toilet paper roll to keep them organized. Thread the end through the hole to keep it from unraveling.
Take a Picture of the Back of Your Entertainment System.
Worried you’ll never be able to put together your TV, DVR, Xbox, Playstation, external speakers and all the rest of the electronics that make up your entertainment system? Take a picture of the back where all the wires are connected. That will help you remember where to plug in each piece.
Keep a spreadsheet of moving expenses for taxes.
Are you planning on using your moving expenses as a tax-deductible item? Track all your expenses in a spreadsheet so you’ll be able to calculate what you can deduct when it’s time to do your taxes. To learn more, you can read about it on the Canada Revenue Agency website on the Moving Expenses page.
Store jewellery in ice-cube trays with plastic wrap.
Don’t want all your jewellery getting tangled in the move? Use ice-cube trays to keep each necklace and bracelet separate. Wrap the tray with layers of plastic wrap to keep the items secure in their container during the move.
Re-use jars and canisters for baking supplies.
Lots of people keep sugar, flour and other baking supplies in the bags they came in. That’s not very secure for a move. Instead, wash out and keep your old pasta jars and ground coffee canisters. Put your baking supplies inside those re-seal able jars and canisters.
Doesn’t sound so hard, does it? Use these simple organizational hacks and your packing and unpacking process will go that much more smoothly.
