Storing your stuff during a home renovation

February 6, 2018 By A Very Moving Blog

With the uncertainty of home values in Canada, more families than ever are opting to do home renovations to maintain their home’s value. There is also a rising trend among new homeowners to buy older homes, fix them up, and to do much of the work themselves. These rising trends of home improvement not only address the need for more space or an updated design in a home but help to increase its value.

Depending on the size of your renovation, you may come to the conclusion that you’ll need to store your items somewhere until the renovation is done.  To help you, we’ve compiled some tips for storing your stuff during your home improvement project.

Storing your items

As mentioned in our Storage Solutions Guide, the first thought when choosing a storage facility should be on how long you anticipate you’ll be there. This includes the seasons and the changing climates that your items will endure. This is especially important for some items like electronics and antiques, as the changing temperatures can alter these items significantly.

After you’ve determined how long your renovation will be, you’ll need to decide if you should store your items somewhere else in your house, or if you should look into an outside storage company. Often, homeowners don’t have much space to store their items, which leaves many to seek out storage facilities.

If you do have space in your home, we recommend that you clearly label each and every box or item before it’s stored away. Doing this step will allow you to easily find any item during your renovation. If you’re in need of storage supplies, every TWO MEN AND A TRUCK ® location has packing and moving supplies.

Outside storage facilities

We recommend that you research your storage companies thoroughly. Ideally, you should be looking for a company that has a reputable customer service rating and has a flexible storage contract. Renovations tend to run much longer than anticipated, so you should look for a company that is willing to store your items for either an additional short-term or long-term basis.

If you’re looking for a trusted and easy solution, all TWO MEN AND A TRUCK ® locations have on-site storage or have a good relationship with a reputable local storage facility.

If you’re in need of help to pack, store or move your items during your renovation, don’t hesitate to call TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®
